Isn't it stupid to put a ball through a hoop?

I mean basketball.
Why? Why would you do that?

I mean the purpose of all the original Greek sports(running, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing, pankration) have real world use, if you are good at such sport, your body is developed to fit corresponding real world work, which produce goods or offer protection of oneself.
But training my body to throw a bouncy ball through a hoop doesn't help me to do real work, or help me defend myself.

I have nothing to gain from it, why would I want to do that?
The sole purpose of basketball is entertainment, is living to the hype of "putting a bouncy ball through a hoop is awesome", if it ain't a bouncy ball but a rock then it's lame.
That makes no sense.

Basketball was invented by a PROFESSOR PHYSICIAN James Naismith, playing it would be saying you're schooled, which is contradictory to the idea of being jocks.
